Role of Migration in the development of Singapore
Abstract Migration, a key aspect of global demographic change, plays a crucial role in nations’the socioeconomic transformation of nations. This study examines the significance of migration in the economic development of Singapore, a nation that strategically embraced migration policy post-independence migration policy in 1965. Using secondary data and cartographic methods, this study analyzes how foreign labor, particularly through employment passes and bilateral agreements with South and Southeast Asian nations, contributed to Singapore’s growth in the manufacturing, services, and high-tech sectors. The findings highlight that migration has been instrumental in addressing labor shortages, boosting GDP, and fostering multicultural integration, and establishing Singapore as a successful model of planned migration-driven development.
