Assessment of Mortality Rate and Contributing Factors in a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Prospective Observational Study
ABSTRACT: Background: This study aimed to evaluate the mortality rate in a tertiary care hospital and identify demographic, clinical, and comorbid factors contributing to inpatient deaths. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted over six months at a tertiary care hospital in Bangalore. Adult patients (>18 years) who died during hospitalization were included. Data were collected from medical records, including demographic data, hospital stay duration, comorbidities, and causes of death. Results: Among 60 patients, 55% were aged 35–64 and 68.33% were male. Hypertension and diabetes mellitus were the most prevalent comorbidities (each 18.6%). Sepsis accounted for 62.7% of deaths, followed by cardiovascular causes (13.95%). Lifestyle factors such as smoking (13.33%) and alcohol use (16.66%) were observed. Conclusion: Sepsis and chronic comorbidities significantly influenced mortality. Improved recognition of high-risk patients and timely interventions are essential to reduce preventable deaths in tertiary settings.
