The Role of 'Make in India' in Transforming India's Sports Industry: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract The "Make in India" initiative, launched in 2014, aims to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce dependency on imports across various sectors, including sports. This paper explores the impact of the initiative on India's sports industry by analyzing opportunities for local manufacturing, infrastructure development, and employment generation. It examines how policies promoting indigenous production of sports equipment, apparel, and infrastructure contribute to economic growth and self-reliance. Additionally, the study highlights challenges such as technological limitations, global competition, and supply chain constraints that hinder the initiative's full potential. By assessing case studies of successful domestic sports brands and government interventions, the paper provides insights into the future prospects of the sports manufacturing sector in India. The findings suggest that with the right policy support, investment in research and development, and collaboration with global entities, India can emerge as a significant hub for sports manufacturing and innovation
