The Information Retrieval Reduction (aka Benchmark Gaming): How Large Language Models Can Simulate Expert Knowledge Through Advanced Pattern Matching
Abstract Contemporary AI benchmarks, including the recently introduced "Humanity's Last Exam," may be fundamentally vulnerable to sophisticated information retrieval and pattern matching rather than genuine reasoning. We propose a mathematical framework demonstrating how expert-level performance on specialized knowledge benchmarks can be achieved through semantic search optimization rather than true domain understanding. Drawing from our Neural-Matrix Synaptic Resonance Network (NM-SRN) v2.0 AGI research, we contrast retrieval-based performance with genuine reasoning-dependent problems such as novel NP-Hard constructions and open mathematical conjectures. Our analysis suggests that current evaluation methods conflate retrieval sophistication with cognitive capability, necessitating a paradigm shift toward truly reasoning-dependent problems that cannot be solved through pattern matching approaches.
