Causal Pathway Analysis: Social Justice Ideology to Economic Growth in Tamil Nadu
Abstract This study employs Causal Pathway Analysis, utilizing a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) framework, to delineate the intricate relationship between social justice ideology and economic growth, with a specific focus on the experience of Tamil Nadu, India. Drawing upon historical data and policy documents, the analysis identifies a sequential causal chain: Social Justice Ideology (specifically the Dravidian movement's emphasis on caste equality and inclusion) led to the implementation of Reservation Policies, which subsequently boosted Educational Attainment among marginalized groups. This improved educational profile translated into enhanced Workforce Skills, ultimately contributing to increased Productivity and, in turn, sustained Economic Growth. The study also identifies critical moderating factors (implementation challenges) such as pre-college preparation, social stigma, educational quality, uneven benefits, and workplace discrimination, which influenced the efficiency and equity of the pathway. Confounding variables, including other education policies, economic context shifts, and geographic factors, are also acknowledged. This analysis provides a structured understanding of how targeted social justice interventions can serve as potent drivers of inclusive economic development, offering valuable insights for policymakers globally.
