Project DEFINERS Interview Protocol: Exploring Teachers' Technology Mediated Language Teaching and Learning
Project DEFINERS – Interview Protocol: Exploring Teachers' Technology-Mediated Language Teaching and Learning (v 1.0) presents a semi-structured guide for eliciting rich, reflective narratives from language-education professionals about their use of digital technologies. Adapted from Shafiee, Marandi, & Mirzaeian (2022), the protocol aligns with Project DEFINERS’ goal of documenting how language educators shape, and are shaped by, technology-mediated practices and professional identities. The document contains: (1) interviewer guidelines and ethical reminders; (2) a 13-item demographic survey; and (3) fifteen core questions with italicized sub-prompts that probe the why and how behind teachers’ choices, including recent experiences with AI, social networking sites, and video games. Estimated interview length is 45–60 minutes. The format is intentionally semi-structured: interviewers are encouraged to rephrase unclear items and to explore emergent topics before returning to the guide. Version 1.0 underwent peer review by six international experts (Spain ×3, Portugal, China, United States) to ensure clarity, cultural relevance, and methodological rigor. The protocol is released under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0) to facilitate adoption, adaptation, and replication in language-education research worldwide.
