Central Asia: An Emerging Focus Area for India
Central Asia has emerged as a key focus area for India due to its strategic location, rich natural resources, and economic potential. The region, comprising Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, offers India opportunities for energy security, trade, and geopolitical influence. India's engagement in Central Asia is driven by its need to diversify energy sources, counterbalance China and Pakistan, and strengthen regional security. However, connectivity, security concerns, and external influences from Russia, China, and the United States complicate India's efforts.India has sought to enhance its presence in Central Asia through diplomatic initiatives like the India-Central Asia Summit, participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and infrastructure projects such as the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). Despite these efforts, India's trade with the region remains limited compared to China's dominance.Security concerns, including terrorism and religious extremism, also shape India's strategy, especially regarding Afghanistan’s stability. Additionally, India leverages its historical, cultural, and soft power connections to deepen ties with Central Asian nations. Moving forward, India aims to expand economic partnerships, improve connectivity, and reinforce its role as a balancing power in the region while navigating geopolitical complexities.
