Funding and Coordinating a National Diamond Open Access Landscape: Strengths and Untapped Potential in Canada
Canada has developed a robust and supportive ecosystem for Diamond Open Access, enabling open and inclusive scholarly communication. With a growing landscape of over 450 Diamond Open Access journals, Canadian journals benefit from a diverse array of financial and in-kind support from research funders, libraries, service providers, and other key stakeholders. These actors share the economic responsibilities of sustaining Diamond Open Access publishing, often coordinating their efforts to ensure its sustainability. This collaborative approach includes significant government investments at both national and provincial levels, including investments in the open infrastructures that underpin the system. However, while this amalgamated model has proven effective, there remains untapped potential to enhance its impact. By strengthening coordination among stakeholders, Canada can broaden the societal benefits of Diamond Open Access—particularly by attracting more journals currently published by for-profit entities and expanding funding programs to include STEM journals, which are often excluded. Presented at the DIAMAS final conference by Coalition Publica, Canada's national open infrastructure for scholarly publishing, this poster provides a visual representation of the diverse levels and forms of support available to Diamond Open Access journals in Canada. It highlights the key stakeholders, their connections, and their collaborative interactions, showcasing how this model contributes to the sustainability and growth of DOA in Canada. The insights gained from Canada's experience may offer valuable lessons and inspire similar strategies in other contexts, where stakeholders are considering funding models for Diamond Open Access.
