Indian Knowledge Traditions (IKT) and the Evolution of Holistic Education
This research paper explores the deep interconnection between Indian Knowledge Traditions (IKT) andthe concept of holistic education, aiming to trace how ancient educational philosophies have influencedand can continue to inform modern pedagogical frameworks. Drawing upon a qualitative methodologybased entirely on secondary data, the study analyzes classical texts, scholarly literature, historicalaccounts, and contemporary policy documents to map the evolution of holistic education in India. TheIndian tradition, rooted in Vedic, Upanishadic, Buddhist, and indigenous systems, emphasizes theintegration of intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual development. Core values such as selfrealization, ethical living, experiential learning, and interconnectedness with society and nature formthe essence of this tradition. Key findings highlight that holistic education in IKT is not merely aboutcontent delivery but about cultivating the whole being—mind, body, and spirit. The study alsoexamines recent educational reforms, particularly the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, whichseeks to re-integrate these traditional insights into modern curricula. By revisiting these time-testedparadigms, the paper argues for a meaningful convergence of tradition and modernity in shaping abalanced, value-driven, and inclusive educational future
