Environmental Audits and Their Effect on Sustainable Business Growth
Abstract: This study investigates the role of environmental audits as a strategic mechanism for advancing sustainable business growth. Traditionally viewed as instruments of compliance, environmental audits are increasingly recognized for their broader value in enhancing environmental stewardship, operational effectiveness, and stakeholder confidence. Drawing on established theoretical models:-including Elkington’s Triple Bottom Line, the Porter Hypothesis, and the Theory of Planned Behaviour, the research explores how audits can drive sustainable development by influencing organizational decision-making and long-term planning. Relying on a comprehensive review of secondary data, including scholarly literature, case studies, and industry analyses, this paper highlights the evolution of environmental auditing practices in diverse sectors and regions. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things have expanded the scope and precision of audits, enabling more proactive environmental risk management. Nevertheless, challenges persist, particularly concerning inconsistent audit frameworks, limited professional capacity, and barriers to implementation in resource-constrained environments like SMEs. The study is structured around three core dimensions: the scope and methodology of audit practices, organizational responses to audit outcomes, and the effectiveness of sustainability indicators in assessing impact. The findings reveal that when audits are strategically integrated into business operations, they contribute not only to improved environmental performance but also to economic efficiency and stronger social accountability. While obstacles remain, the research underscores the importance of enhancing audit methodologies and refining sustainability metrics to maximize the contribution of environmental audits to long-term, responsible business growth.
