Gravitational Waves as Probes of Dark Energy and Quantum Gravity

Abstract: Gravitational waves (GWs) have revolutionized modern physics, providing direct insights into black hole mergers, neutron star collisions, and the structure of spacetime. Beyond their astrophysical applications, recent theoretical work suggests that gravitational waves could serve as probes of dark energy and quantum gravity, offering a new window into cosmology and high-energy physics. This paper explores how gravitational wave propagation, polarization modes, and potential deviations from General Relativity could reveal the underlying nature of dark energy and quantum gravitational effects. We analyze possible modifications in the GW dispersion relation, additional polarization states predicted by modified gravity theories, and how next-generation detectors—including LISA, Cosmic Explorer, and the Einstein Telescope—can constrain dark energy evolution, quantum spacetime fluctuations, and extra-dimensional effects. Key Highlights: Using GW propagation effects to test dark energy evolution and cosmic acceleration. Quantum gravity signatures in high-frequency GW signals and Planck-scale modifications. Modified dispersion relations and their implications for fundamental physics. Exploring additional polarization states predicted by quantum gravity and modified gravity theories. Observational constraints from LIGO, Virgo, LISA, and future gravitational wave experiments. By integrating general relativity, quantum gravity, and observational astrophysics, this work proposes a new role for gravitational waves as cosmological and quantum probes, offering a potential experimental pathway to testing fundamental physics beyond the Standard Model. Keywords: Gravitational waves, dark energy, quantum gravity, modified gravity, extra dimensions, GW dispersion relations, high-energy physics, cosmic acceleration, LISA, gravitational wave polarization.
