One great example that shows how to eliminate the gender gap in the research environment and management
This presentation was delivered as part of the workshop "Gender dimension in research and innovation" (2nd Edition) organized by Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv on April 28–29, 2025. The presentation offers a personal narrative of overcoming structural and cultural gender barriers in academic research and leadership. It reflects on the speaker’s professional path from early career challenges to becoming a university leader during wartime. Through lived experience, the presentation explores how gender bias, institutional resistance, motherhood, displacement, and war intersect in shaping academic careers. Topics addressed include: Gender inequality in research administration and academic hierarchies; Balancing scientific identity with leadership roles; Ethical dilemmas and standing up to misconduct in academia; Resilience and institutional transformation under occupation; The concept of a "university without walls" and the reinvention of academic systems during crisis; Lessons learned on leadership, integrity, work–life balance, and systemic change. The presentation combines personal storytelling with broader structural insights and is intended to inspire reflection on gendered experiences in research environments, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected contexts.
