THE GRADIENT OF PAIN AS A UNIVERSAL PERSPECTIVE: AN ACADEMIC ANALYSIS
Introduction The nature of sensation, motivation, and consciousness remains a central problem in philosophy, psychology, and cognitive science. This study proposes a model in which all forms of affective experience can be reduced to the dynamics of a pain gradient—a continuous spectrum where the distinction between suffering and pleasure becomes topological rather than discrete. The working hypothesis is that all subjectivity derives from the system’s capacity for affective response, and that this response is always coded as pain—even when it appears in a positive form (Craig, 2003; Damasio, 1999).
