Translation Difficulties in Intercultural Communication
Abstract: This article examines the complexities of translation in intercultural communication, focusing on the difficulties translators face when navigating between languages and cultures. It delves into how cultural nuances, idiomatic expressions, and differences in non-verbal communication can lead to misinterpretations and distortions of meaning. The paper explores common translation challenges, such as the untranslatability of certain terms, cultural references, and the role of context in determining meaning. Drawing on a range of case studies, the article also considers the strategies employed by professional translators, including the use of paraphrasing, adaptation, and the importance of cultural competence. The findings highlight the critical need for a deep understanding of both the source and target cultures, as well as the broader context in which communication occurs, in order to bridge cultural gaps and facilitate effective cross-cultural dialogue.
