Invasion of the Uninvited: The Devasting Consequences of Non-Native Plant Species

Most people consider non-native (also known as "exotic" or "alien") species to be invasive, human-introduced, and detrimental to local economies and ecosystems. Due to increased trade, travel, and the transportation of products, the introduction and establishment of invasive species is becoming a more pressing issue on a global scale. Non-native species invasions are one of the main anthropogenic global alterations that are changing the planet; they have led to several extinctions and significantly altered many ecosystems. Ecosystems, biodiversity, and socioeconomic interests are increasingly at risk from biological invaders. Unintended repercussions have resulted from the introduction of non-native species into the European Union through trade, tourism, and other means. A subset of these non-native species is known as "invasive" because they have detrimental effects. This study examines how invasive species alter food webs, nutrient cycling, habitat structure, and ecosystem services, among other aspects of native ecosystems and biodiversity. We also go over management and prevention tactics, such as biological control and early identification and quick response.
