Solid waste management in Somalia.
ABSTRACT Environmental planning plays a crucial role in disaster management by incorporating proactive measures to mitigate the impacts of natural and human-induced hazards on the environment and communities. This study assesses environmental planning practices and their role in disaster management in the Garowe district, Puntland, Somalia. Effective ecological planning involves assessing potential risks and vulnerabilities, Identifying high- risk areas and formulating strategies to minimize disaster impacts. It encompasses various aspects, including land use planning, resource management, ecosystem preservation, and sustainable development practices. By integrating disaster risk reduction measures into planning processes, environmental planners can enhance community resilience and reduce the vulnerability of both natural and built environments. It aims to prevent or minimize the occurrence of hazards by implementing appropriate zoning regulations, building codes, and environmental impact assessments. It seeks to protect and restore ecosystems that act as natural buffers against disasters. Environmental planning contributes to sustainable and resilient societies by integrating environmental considerations into disaster management. It helps minimize the loss of life, property, and natural resources while promoting the preservation of ecosystems and the overall well-being of communities. However, its success depends on the commitment of governments, organizations, and individuals to prioritize environmental planning as an crucial part of disaster risk reduction strategies. The role of environmental planning in disaster management is crucial for creating safer and more resilient communities. By incorporating proactive measures, promoting sustainable development, and protecting ecosystems, environmental planning contributes to minimizing the impacts of disasters and enhancing overall resilience. It serves as a building block for informed decision-making and practical strategies that address the complex challenges posed by natural and human-induced hazards. The findings of the study suggest that environmental planning can contribute significantly to disaster management by reducing vulnerability, enhancing resilience, and promoting sustainable development practices in the face of natural hazards.
