Transforming Garbage Management With Smart IoT Solutions

Abstract—Effective garbage management is required for urban livability and health. Garbage collection networks are often plagued with issues such as ineffective routing, delayed pickups, and wastage of resources. The use of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies brings a variety of solutions to all these issues. This paper expounds on current developments in IoT-based garbage tracking systems and the role of IoT devices in ensuring real-time monitoring, route optimization, and effectiveness in operations. A comprehensive literature review involving research in smart garbage cans employing artificial intelligence for automatic classification of waste, multi-agent Internet of Things architecture for real-time waste collection and monitoring, and verification of sensor readings by means of machine learning for waste collection indicates notable technical innovations and deployment challenges, together with recommendations for future work toward IoT integration with waste management.
