Toward a Foundational Helix Model of Innovation
This position paper proposes the Foundational Helix Model (FHM) as a paradigm shift in innovation theory, critically reconfiguring the Quintuple Helix Innovation Model. While the QHIM includes the natural environment as a fifth helix, the FHM asserts that ecological systems must be understood not as an equal stakeholder, but as the foundational substrate upon which academia, industry, government, and civil society depend. The model advocates for regenerative innovation, place-based ecological literacy, and systemic awareness. Ireland is presented as an ideal testing ground for this approach due to its rich biodiversity, civic engagement, and progressive environmental policy frameworks. The FHM offers a strategic lens for designing Living Labs, Horizon Europe proposals, and cross-sectoral climate action rooted in ecological realities.
