சஙக கலப பணகளன மணபகள / The Merits of Women in the Sangam Period
Literature tells us that women lived with dignity during the Sangam period. Women of that time were called by many names like Mangala Mahal, Manaiyal, Mellyil Mahal, Seyizhay Mahal, Veyyol, and Vasayil Mahal. Tolkappiyar says that the primary qualities of a woman are fear and modesty. Moreover, life is the most important thing for living beings in the world. But Tolkappiyar points out that modesty is better than life for women and chastity is better than wisdom. The hero says that the love of the heroine will continue in the next birth. No matter how many births she takes, loving women think that her husband should come as her husband in all births. The hero's love is revealed by the hero cooking as he likes. Literature shows that the love that women of the Sangam period had for their husbands was greater than the earth, higher than the sky and deeper than the sea. There is no better wealth for women than children. Hospitality was one of the essential customs practised by their ancestors. Women who lived in the Sangam period were also known for their bravery. The bravery of women is revealed through the mother who sent her only son to war the day after her father and husband died in the war. This article studies the merits of the Sangam Women.
