From Legacy to Leadership: Transforming OLCF's Data Repository for the Future of Open Scientific Data
The Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) recently updated their open, generalist large-data repository, "Constellation," a service provided to our exascale supercomputer facility users and scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This update represents a significant leap forward in the application of sustainable and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles in advanced scientific research. This presentation will explore Constellations' transformation, focusing on adoption of open-source community technologies as Digital Public Goods (DPG), repurposing large-data hardware infrastructure, data curation at scale, and integration of data services to address the challenges of large-scale data management and sharing. Additionally, the presentation will dive into an initial approach on using artificial intelligence (AI) to help with automating metadata extraction and explore what is missing to enable AI with/for data curation. The presentation will highlight key design and governance updates, providing actionable insights for repository managers. Finally, this presentation will offer a vision for the future of repositories in enabling global collaboration and tackling emerging scientific challenges.
