Electricity Sector Emissions Targets
This exercise investigated the impact of South Africa's draft Sector Emission Targets (SETS), established under the Paris Agreement, on the nation's electricity sector energy mix. Faced with aggressive CO2eq reduction targets for 2025-2030, this research examines the resulting shifts in power generation. The main findings indicate a significant decline in traditional coal power generation to comply with the SETS. Consequently, the study reveals a corresponding increase in investment and deployment of alternative technologies, specifically wind and gas, reshaping the energy mix within South Africa's power sector.
