Sports and Yoga in NEP 2020: A Sustainable Move
Abstract: The New Education Policy (NEP) in India, introduced in 2020, aims to shift the existing educational environment from a rigid, formal Macaulayian pattern to a more inclusive, flexible, and student-oriented one. The NEP addresses the gap between the skills taught in Indian institutes and the requirements of the industry, aiming to equip students with critical thinking, creativity, and interdisciplinary learning. It also promotes inclusivity and equity, ensuring education is accessible to all sections of society through regional languages. The NEP aims to promote holistic development, integrating physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being into the curriculum. It also aims to improve the quality of education by reducing the number of lectures and emphasizing practical project-based learning. Lastly, the NEP encourages multidisciplinary education, offering students the option to choose subjects from various fields, aiming for all-round development. The NEP has introduced The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) with the purpose to revive the rich ancient cultural heritage of India. It includes the disciplines such as Philosophy, Science, Mathematics, Art, Literature, Medicine, and Spiritual practices etc IKS is grounded in classical Indian texts, such as the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, and Darshanas, and the contributions of scholars from various schools of thought. Going further, it encompasses practical knowledge of agriculture, craftsmanship, and sustainability. Sports and Yoga have a rich history, originating in ancient India as a spiritual and philosophical practice. The practice of Yoga has evolved over time, with key figures like Patanjali composing the Yoga Sutras around 200 BCE. Both Sports and Yoga have multiple benefits to all. They foster social and emotional growth, leadership qualities and stronger social bonds. The present paper discusses the role of Sports and Yoga as the IKS fields to bring holistic and sustainable development
