Phytochemical Investigation and Therapeutic Potential of Anogeissus latifolia: A Promising Source of Bioactive Compounds

ABSTRACT Anogeissus latifolia, commonly known as Bakili, is a medium to large deciduous tree native to India, Nepal, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka, belonging to the Combretaceae family. This plant has various uses, including traditional medicine for treating ailments such as fever, diabetes, skin diseases, and snake bites, and it is valuable for its timber, fuel, and ability to tan leather. The present study focuses on the extraction, chemical analysis, and phytochemical screening of Anogeissus latifolia. The leaves were collected, authenticated, and extracted using ethanol in a Soxhlet apparatus. The yield of the crude extract was calculated to be 8.53%. Phytochemical analysis was conducted to identify the presence of various bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, carbohydrates, saponins, flavonoids, steroids, triterpenoids, tannins, glycosides, amino acids, and proteins. The study employed a series of qualitative tests, including Dragendorff’s, Molisch’s, and Ferric chloride tests, to confirm the presence of these compounds. These findings provide valuable insights into the bioactive potential of Anogeissus latifolia, supporting its therapeutic applications and highlighting the need for further investigation into its medicinal properties.
