Cardiothyrotoxicosis: A Life-Threatening Complication of Hyperthyroidism Leading to Cardiac Arrest
Abstract Cardiothyrotoxicosis represents a life-threatening complication of hyperthyroidism, characterized by severe cardiac rhythm disturbances and hemodynamic instability. This condition can precipitate potentially fatal arrhythmias leading to cardiac arrest, especially in patients with underlying cardiac disease or those experiencing a thyroid storm. We present three clinical cases of cardiothyrotoxicosis culminating in cardiac arrest, illustrating the diverse clinical presentations and the complex pathophysiological mechanisms involved. The discussion reviews the impact of excess thyroid hormones on cardiac function, the associated risks of arrhythmias and heart failure, and the importance of rapid diagnosis and multidisciplinary management. Early recognition and aggressive treatment of thyrotoxicosis and its cardiovascular complications are crucial to reducing morbidity and mortality. Increased clinician awareness and vigilant monitoring of at-risk patients are essential for optimizing outcomes.
