PrePrint - Enhancing Trace DNA Recovery from Disposable Face Masks: Insights from the COVID-19 Era and Beyond
This study investigates the recovery of trace DNA from disposable face masks—key forensic evidence during the COVID-19 era—using two collection methods: cotton swabbing and tapelifting. Analysis of 50 robbery-related masks showed that SceneSafe Fast™ minitape (MT) significantly outperformed Copan cotton swabs (CS), yielding higher DNA concentrations (0.41 ng/μL vs. 0.17 ng/μL; p < 0.05) and more complete profiles. The results demonstrate the superior efficiency of minitapes, especially for small or fabric-like surfaces, and recommend their routine use in mask-related casework to improve DNA recovery reliability and forensic outcomes.
