Managing Conflicts in Entrepreneurial Teams in Rivers State (The Role of Emotional Intelligence)

Entrepreneurial teams in Rivers State, Nigeria, operate within a complex socioeconomic and cultural environment, often characterized by resource constraints, high-pressure decision-making, and diverse team compositions. This study investigates the role of emotional intelligence (EI) in conflict management within these teams, aiming to understand how unresolved disputes affect team performance and explore strategies to enhance conflict resolution. Drawing on Emotional Intelligence Theory, Conflict Management Theories, and Team Dynamics frameworks, the research utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 200 participants across entrepreneurial sectors. Results reveal that conflicts frequently stem from resource allocation, personality clashes, and work style differences. The findings underscore that unresolved conflicts negatively impact productivity, trust, and innovation. Conversely, diversity in professional and functional backgrounds positively influences conflict resolution, fostering collaboration and innovative problem-solving. Emotional intelligence emerges as a pivotal factor in managing interpersonal dynamics, with high EI levels significantly improving team cohesion, communication, and conflict resolution outcomes. This study concludes by highlighting the need for targeted training in EI and structured conflict management strategies to enhance team performance in entrepreneurial contexts. The insights contribute to the broader understanding of team dynamics and conflict management, offering practical implications for entrepreneurs and policymakers in similar environments.
