Towards an Integrative Model to Achieve a Successful Diffusion of Innovation in Sustainable Development Projects.

This study represents a research-based integrative model that illustrates thekey factors required to achieve a successful Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) inSustainable Development (SD) projects. The proposed integrative model ofthis study is developed using a systematic literature review, which is narroweddown to focus on the DOI model introduced by Banytė and Salickaitė (2008).The adopted DOI model introduces three main stages for a successful DOI inprojects. These stages are the creation, diffusion, and adoption of innovativeideas. Through the systematic literature review, each stage could be related toSD projects. This has led to the initiation of three new stages: 'creation ofinnovative ideas in SD projects’, ‘diffusion of innovative ideas in SD projects’,and ‘adoption of innovative ideas in SD projects’. Then, each stage in themodel is divided into two possibilities, referred to as success or failure factorsof DOI in SD projects. The findings indicate that embracing the successfactors in creating innovative ideas, diffusing innovation, and adoptinginnovative ideas would lead to a successful DOI in SD projects. Conversely, the appearance of any of the failure factors would interrupt or lead to thefailure of the DOI in SD projects. Thus, practitioners should be aware of thesuccess factors in each stage and apply them effectively to achieve asuccessful DOI in SD projects.
