Broadband Connectivity and Scholarly Communication: Enhancing Research Output and Impact
Since the late 1990s, broadband connectivity has significantly increased, transforming education and career opportunities. The Internet enhances access to knowledge and information, leading to better academic outcomes and facilitating research by providing diverse sources. Researchers can now access a wider range of materials online, promoting their research skills. This chapter investigates how broadband accessibility affects research activity in various countries. Using academic journal articles as a proxy for research activity, the study measures the effects of broadband on publications, citations, and h-index. Findings suggest that broadband access increases the number of journal articles published and citations, with significant policy implications for broadband investment. Several factors explain how the Internet supports academic publications: free access to journal articles, reduced information costs, new publishing options, and efficient communication channels. The Internet also provides user friendly access through electronic devices, enhancing the distribution and visibility of research. Overall, the Internet has revolutionized academic content access, enabled global connectivity and fostered innovation in research elds. The proliferation of mobile Internet has further expanded access, making it a crucial tool for creativity and academic growth.
