Sustainable Development Plan for Public Transportation Systems in Port Harcourt

This paper presents a sustainable public transportation plan for Port Harcourt, Nigeria, aimed at addressing urban mobility challenges, reducing environmental impact, and improving accessibility. Based on a survey of 15 residents, 93.3% support a scheduled bus service for its environmental benefits, with 80% believing it could ease congestion. Key preferences include comfortable seating (66.7%) and air conditioning (60%). Drawing on global examples like Bogotá’s Trans Milenio, Bangkok’s water transport system, and Amsterdam’s cycling infrastructure, the plan proposes a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, expanded ferry services, and non-motorized transport options. By 2035, the goal is to create a greener, more efficient transit network.
