Navigating Resettlement: Afghan Students' Integration in the US Post-2021
This study explores the lived experiences of Afghan students who were resettled in the United States following the 2021 crisis, with a particular focus on those attending Bard College. Through qualitative analysis, the research identifies the key challenges these students face, including linguistic and academic disparities, socio-cultural adjustments, and emotional stressors. Bard College's commitment to social justice and inclusivity is exemplified through its provision of full scholarships to 75 Afghan students, highlighting its role in supporting displaced individuals. The findings underscore the importance of providing tailored support to Afghan students, including cultural sensitivity training, mentorship initiatives, and customized academic resources, to enhance their academic and personal integration into the U.S. educational system. This research contributes to the ongoing dialogue on refugee education and integration, offering practical recommendations for institutions, policymakers, and community leaders looking to support displaced students. By focusing on the specific challenges faced by Afghan students at Bard College, this study aims to inform institutional practices and policies, promoting more inclusive and supportive environments for displaced individuals worldwide. Its insights are intended to benefit both students at Bard and similar institutions, as well as advance global discussions on how to best support refugee education and integration.
