Analysis and predictions of financial flows in Eurozone
For hundreds of years, common transactions of money were made based on physical assets like gold, silver, plate, or cash, but in recent years, financial flows have changed significantly and one of these areas has been the Eurozone, a region with 20 countries in Europe that have adopted the Euro as general currency and that have faced a notable shift from traditional cash payments to digital methods. This study analyzes financial flows and their methods of payments in the Eurozone between 2019 and 2023, examining changes on payment and transactions preferences mainly among consumers and businesses thanks to available data based on surveys about payment behaviors around digital and physical methods but also this study analyses digital payments based on the Eurosystem of the European Central Bank (ECB), this research explores trends in cash usage, digital transactions, and the growing role of electronic payment systems. The findings show a significant decrease in cash transactions, which now represent a smaller share of total payment, and digital methods, such as credit transfers, e-money, and card payments, have grown in terms of percentage and importance, particularly in online and point-of-sale transactions. Additionally, businesses show a clear preference for digital payments due to increased efficiency, security, and consumer demand. However, cash remains relevant for person-to-person transactions and in specific regions with lower digital adoption. Applying clustering techniques like KNN and the analysis of the different charts show that the eurozone has two different velocities in terms of the adoption of new technologies to make payments, while most of the Western and Northern countries have been adopting different methods of digital payments, central and Mediterranean countries face lags in terms of digitalization, leaning more toward cash transactions. In terms of predictions, the future financial flow trends reveal that digital payments will continue to expand while cash usage will persist in certain segments. These understandings are crucial for policymakers, financial institutions, and businesses seeking to adapt to an evolving payment landscape and ensure inclusive financial accessibility.
