Beyond Appearance: Structural Discrimination and the Illusion of Normality
This essay explores the hidden mechanisms of everyday discrimination based on appearance, with a focus on Japan and references to global patterns. Through discussions of tattoos, hair color, clothing, and poverty, it reveals how arbitrary standards of “normal” are used to judge, exclude, and control individuals. The work challenges the notion of meritocracy and proposes empathy and imagination as tools for reimagining a more inclusive society.
