Scenario-Based Evaluation of Microgrid Options for Cost-Effective and Sustainable Electrification in Remote Mauritanian Communities

This presentation, developed as part of the Energy Modelling Platform for Africa (EMP-A) 2025, investigates electrification options for remote, off-grid Mauritanian communities. It evaluates whether integrating solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and battery storage with diesel generation can deliver more sustainable and cost-effective outcomes. Electricity demand was assessed using the RAMP tool with a 3% annual growth rate, and three system configurations were simulated using MicrogridsPy: diesel-only, diesel + solar PV, and diesel + solar PV + battery. Results demonstrate that hybrid systems, particularly those including battery storage, significantly reduce fuel consumption, operational costs, and CO₂ emissions. These findings provide actionable insights to support Mauritania’s rural electrification and climate-aligned development strategies.
