Correlational Study of Defence Mechanisms and Adjustment of College Students Belonging to Science Stream

The current research seeks to explore the relationship between defence mechanism and the adjustmentof college students. During their college experience, students encounter various adjustment challenges, including language barriers, issues with food and sanitation, difficulties in communication, andproblems related to culture, traditions and customs. To cope with these challenges, students employvarious types of defence mechanisms. Some students resort to ineffective and unhealthy defencemechanisms which can negatively impact their mental and emotional well-being. The transition fromhigh school to college present a variety of academic, social and emotional challenges for students. Therefore, the relationship between Defence Mechanism and Adjustment of college students has beena subject of considerable psychological inquiry. Some studies suggest that Defence Mechanisms canimpact student’s ability to adjust to college life, others argue that no such significant correlation exists, especially in specific student groups like in science stream. The results of the research can be utilizedto address the issues of adjustment and defense mechanisms among college students in variousenvironments. This research demonstrates whether there is a significant correlation between defensemechanisms and the adjustment of college students in the science stream. The study also uncovers howdifferent Defence Mechanisms impact psychological well-being, academic performance and socialinteractions among students. The study uses Pearson’s correlation to analyse data collected from 60 students of science stream. Theresults shows that there is no significant relationship between Defence Mechanisms used by studentsand their overall adjustment in college life.
