MODERN CONCEPTS OF POLYSEMY

The vast majority of words in a language have not one, but several meanings that arose as a result of the development of human thinking and changes in the reality reflected by the language. The growth of the productive forces of society, the development of science, technology and human culture, the constant increase in information about the world - all this leads to the introduction of new concepts for which the language finds expression, which is manifested in the growth of the vocabulary of the language and in the increase in the number of word meanings. The ability of a word has several meanings is traditionally called polysemy. Despite the fact that at present the existence of polysemy is not in doubt among most researchers, some scientists have denied the possibility of a word being polysemantic.
