Gap Analysis on Interoperability of Blockchain Enabled Traceability Tools for Digital Product Passports

This paper investigates the challenges hindering interoperability among Digital Product Passport (DPP) platforms and proposes recommendations for a more standardised and interoperable ecosystem. DPPs are envisioned to be a key component of a circular and sustainable European economy by providing transparency throughout a product's lifecycle. The key gaps identified in this paper by surveying the current standardisation efforts, particularly when utilising blockchain technology include incompatible data formats across different platforms, lack of standardised governance frameworks for managing data updates and corrections in blockchain-based DPPs, and absence of universal certification standards for different sectors, among others. The paper introduces recommendations prepared for Standard Development Organisations (SDO) for addressing these gaps.
