Just as the age of heroism is referred to in Greece, the age of heroism can also be referred to in Tamil as the age of heroism. During that period, society praised and glorified warriors. The Tamils, who considered death in battle to be a ‘worthy act’, lived their lives in oblivion. They erected nadukals and worshipped those who died heroically on the battlefield. They praised and glorified nadukal worship rather than religious thought and worship. We know this through the literature of the Sangam period and through the writings engraved on nadukals. Archaeological evidence is continuously being found that nadukals or veerakkals existed not only in Tamil Nadu but also in the whole of India. Among these two types, this article aims to reveal the history of nadukal worship in the Tamil land through Tamil literature.
