Nurturing Faith: Respecting Religious Symbolism

Temples hold significant spiritual and cultural importance; however, they have often been targets of destruction and desecration due to misunderstandings of Hindu worship practices. This article examines the theological underpinnings of Hinduism, specifically the differentiation between murti (idol) and devata (deity), to elucidate the origins of prejudice and violence. Drawing on Hindu scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita and Rigveda, as well as Swami Bhaskarananda’s The Essentials of Hinduism (Bhaskarananda, 1994), this study emphasizes the accommodating nature of Hinduism toward various forms of worship. It advocates for integrating comparative religious education into school curricula to enhance understanding, reduce hostility, and protect sacred spaces. Addressing misconceptions, fostering interfaith dialogue, and respecting cultural diversity are proposed as pathways toward harmony and mutual respect.
