Current Status of Slaughterhouses in India
This article provides an overview of the status and challenges of slaughterhouses in India, highlighting the dual regulatory framework of central and state governments. With approximately 8,000 registered and over 25,000 unregistered facilities, the meat production landscape is highly fragmented. Many traditional slaughterhouses suffer from inadequate infrastructure and sanitation, raising public health concerns and contributing to meat contamination. Legal compliance with environmental and animal welfare regulations is often problematic, exacerbated by cultural tensions around meat consumption. Government initiatives to modernize operations and improve hygiene reflect ongoing efforts to address these issues. The future of Indian slaughterhouses will likely depend on regulatory reforms, technological advancements, and evolving consumer preferences, requiring a balance between economic viability, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare ethics.
