Phraseological representation of HONESTY in English and Russian worldviews

The article addresses similarities and differences of phraseological verbalization of the notion honesty in English and Russian. The topicality of the study can be accounted for by linguocultural and comparative approaches to the analysis of the semantic features of phraseological units representing the notion honesty in English and Russian. The convergences manifest themselves in such semantic features as “honesty regarded as a quality of a person”, “honest attitude to something, honest behavior”, “assurance of integrity”. The divergences concern the fact that different semantic features are characterized by the highest degree of nominative density. In English it is the semantic feature “directness, straightforwardness, truthfulness, sincerity”, and in Russian it is the semantic feature “truth and truthfulness”. The semantic feature “generosity, hospitality” is observed only in the meaning of English phraseological units. In Russian, unlike English, phraseological antonyms turn out to be more numerous.
