Gasocrine signaling
I recently proposed the term "gasoreceptor" for all the heme- or metal ion-based gas-binding proteins with different signaling domains whose activity is altered depending on the gas binding state. And I also proposed that gasoreceptor-mediated signaling be referred to as "gasocrine signaling". To investigate gasocrine signaling, there is a critical need to identify gasoreceptors for the essential gasotransmitters such as oxygen (O2) and other non-essential gasotransmitters. Recognizing that gasoreceptors are likely to belong to multiple protein classes with diverse signaling domains and pathways will facilitate a comprehensive search for gasoreceptors in all organisms and across all cell types. This approach will extend the investigation beyond specialized tissues or cells to a systemic exploration. I present a list of some experimentally validated gasoreceptors and, based on thought experiments, the gasocrine hypotheses.
