Sicyonia burkenroadi Cobb 1971

Sicyonia burkenroadi Cobb, 1971 Sicyonia burkenroadi Cobb, 1971: 104, Figs. 1, 2; Lira et al. 2017: 36; Poupin 2018: 98, Fig.79. Material examined. 3 females, 27.5 miles NW La Macolla, Paraguaná Peninsula, Falcón state, 12°20’0”N 70°32’60”W, Fridtjof Nansen R/V st 834, 67 m depth, 3.ix.1988, (MMM-Crus-0257); 1 female, 8 miles off W Testigos Archipelago, 11°20’24”N 63°15’00”W, Fridtjof Nansen R/V st 458, 70–71 m depth, 31.v.1988, (MMM-Crus-0254); 2 nd, 29 miles off N Chuspa, estado Miranda, 11°02’00”N 66°21’00”W, Fridtjof Nansen R/V st 1129, 355– 363 m depth, 28.x 1.1988, (MMM-Crus 447). Geographic & bathymetric distribution. Western Atlantic from USA (North Carolina), Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea to Brazil (Bahia); 29–585 m (Pérez Farfante & Kensley 1997; Felder et al. 2009). Remarks. Previous records for Venezuela: Paraguaná Peninsula, Falcón state (D’Incao 1995) Delta Amacuro, Sucre states and Margarita Island (Lira et al. 2017). Holthuis (1980) remarked that it was very likely that Ewald’s specimens of S. stimpsoni cited for Venezuela do not belong to the true S. stimpsoni, but to S. burkenroadi, which has about the same range, but occurs less deep and predominantly on mud, mud-shell, or mud-sand bottoms. Even though S. stimpsoni has been reported to Venezuela since that for others authors (e.g. Rodríguez 1980; Severeyn & Rodríguez 2000), this species is not considered here because none of them reported the depth where the specimens were caught.
