World Cancer Day - February 4, 2025
What is cancer?Cancer is a term that encompasses a diverse group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells that can invade adjacent tissues and spread to other parts of the body through metastasis. This disease can originate in almost any organ or tissue and manifests in various forms, including carcinomas, sarcomas, leukemias, and lymphomas. In 2018, cancer was responsible for 9.6 million deaths worldwide, making it the second leading cause of death. The global burden of cancer continues to rise, placing significant physical, emotional, and economic strain on patients and healthcare systems, especially in countries with limited resources where access to proper diagnosis and treatment is scarce. However, in countries with robust healthcare systems, survival rates have improved thanks to early detection and effective treatments.
