Pakistan was originally created as a homeland for South Asian Muslims. Pakistan's goal was to protect the largest religious minority in the subcontinent. Over time, religious and political leaders declared that the purpose of establishing Pakistan was to establish an Islamic state. Much of the prejudice against religious minorities stems from Islamists' desire to make Pakistan "purer" in Islamic terms.
