Licensing linguistic data for sharing and reuse
The CLARIN-CH Webinar series on legal aspects of data sharing: Data Protection & Copyright This webinar was the last of a series of webinars organized by CLARIN-CH, which took place monthly during the 2024 spring and the autumn semester. The webinar series aimed to introduce researchers in Switzerland working with language data to the legal aspects of handling personal and sensitive data, including data protection and copyright issues. Licensing linguistic data for sharing and reuse This talk explored key aspects of licensing linguistic data for publication, with a focus on Creative Commons licenses. We delved into the principles of copyright and their implications for publishing research data, as well as the benefits and limitations of various licensing options. We examined how to properly apply a license to linguistic datasets and discussed the significance of doing so for fostering reuse and collaboration. By the end of the session, participants were equipped with the knowledge to responsibly share their linguistic data while protecting their intellectual property rights, and to reuse data respecting the terms of the applied license.
