IS PROCALCITONIN BIOMARKER FOR DETERMINING THE SEVERITY OF ACUTE CHOLANGITIS?
Background Cholangitis is one of the commonest emergencies encountered by gastroenterologists that may warrant drainage of biliary system. Serum procalcitonin (PCT) is an important biomarker of cholangitis with a potential to guide early therapeutic decision. Materials and Methods Our study was conducted on patients who applied to 8 Clinical Hospital and Santa Paraskeva medical center between January 2021 and December 2024 with a diagnosis of AC Results Within the scope of our study, 426 patients were evaluated. 61% (260) were male and 39% (166) were female. The age of the patients ranged from 24 to 88 years with a median age of 56 years. Choledocholitiasis were the most common predisposing factor and were found in 263 patients (62%). Of these, 202 (47.5%) were grade I, 94 (22%) were grade II and 130 (30.5%) were grade III. Conclusion. As a result of the analysis performed in our study, a strong correlation was found between procalcitonin level and disease severity and it was shown that serum procalcitonin level increased as the disease became more severe.
