Counterarchitecture
This document defines and introduces the term counterarchitecture, authored by Katalin Klara Bartfai-Walcott, to describe a foundational design philosophy for digital systems. Counterarchitecture refers to the deliberate inversion of prevailing architectures that extract, simulate, or disempower human agency. It names a structural response to digital systems that operate without human presence, replacing post hoc consent and symbolic control with enforceable authorship, real-time negotiation, and sovereign data ownership. This concept complements the author’s earlier work on psycho-technography by offering a principled engineering alternative that centers choice, representation, and subjectivity in system design. This publication serves as the primary record of the concept’s definition and authorship, and is released under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) for public citation and academic use.
