Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Framework for Morphing Wing using Metamaterials
This presentation explores the innovative possibilities that metamaterials bring to morphing wing design. It examines two methods for incorporating metamaterials: a variable-stiffness leading edge surface and a trailing edge equipped with a metamaterial lattice hinge to enable smooth deformation. A multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) process is applied to optimize and compare this design with a conventional composite wing. The MDO architecture integrates aerodynamic, structural, and control analyses to evaluate the effectiveness of the metamaterial applications. It also highlights the connection between two-dimensional aero-structural wing rib design and surrogate models that extend to three-dimensional aerodynamic and control evaluations, offering valuable insights into the potential of metamaterials in advanced aerospace engineering.
