Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) rearing and culture techniques in different systems

Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) is known as bhetki in any part of India and barramundi in Australia, is a euryhaline member of the family Centropomidae. It is an economically important food fish in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and the Pacific and demand in domestic and international markets. They are medium to large-sized bottom-living fish occurring in coastal seas, estuaries and lagoons at depths between 10 and 50 m. It is commercially cultivated in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Taiwan in brackish and freshwater ponds as well as in cages in coastal waters. They are highly valued food and sport fish caught mainly by artisanal fishermen. Due to its relatively high market value, it has become an attractive commodity for both large and small-scale aquaculture enterprises. It is important as a commercial and subsistence food fish but also is a game fish. The most important commercial fish of Australia, and the most sought after game fish, generates millions of dollars per year in revenue for the sport fishing.
