The Role of Coral Reef Ecosystem Towards the Global Economy
Abstract The article underscores the pivotal role of coral reef ecosystems in sustaining both local and global economies through their diverse ecosystem services. These services, including tourism, fisheries, coastal protection, pharmaceuticals, and carbon sequestration, are vital for millions of people worldwide. However, these invaluable ecosystems face severe threats from climate change, pollution, and overfishing, leading to bleaching events and degradation. Such degradation not only jeopardizes tourism and fisheries but also increases coastal vulnerability. Case studies from the Great Barrier Reef, the Caribbean, and the Maldives highlight the economic significance of these reefs and the risks they face. The article concludes with a strong call for conservation efforts, advocating for sustainable management practices and collective action to protect these critical ecosystems.
